Indoor Air Quality Assessment

The Health Risks of Poor Indoor Air Quality

Many people spend as much as 90 per cent of their time indoors. Research conducted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency shows that the quality of indoor air can be much poorer than outdoor air. That’s why the risks associated with poor indoor air quality – sometimes called building-related illness or “sick building syndrome” – have become a significant public health concern.

Indoor air pollution sources that release gases or particles such as mould or bacteria into the air are the primary cause of workplace-related indoor air quality problems. Inadequate ventilation, high temperatures and humidity can increase indoor pollutant levels. Ensuring the quality of the indoor air is the responsibility of building owners and managers.

Indoor Air Quality Assessment

Greenough Environmental Consulting Inc. (GEC) is fully qualified to conduct Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) assessments in the workplace. We will conduct a visual inspection of the office spaces, fresh air inlets, entrances, parking areas, mechanical rooms, air handling units and exhaust systems. Using the latest IAQ monitoring and sampling equipment, we will measure temperature, relative humidity and levels of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, volatile organic compounds and breathable airborne particles. We will collect air samples and have qualified, fully accredited laboratories analyze them for airborne mould and bacteria.

We will compare our findings to national and international standards, including those in Health Canada’s technical guide to indoor air quality in office buildings. We then make recommendations to address IAQ problems.

With 30 years’ experience and comprehensive professional expertise, Greenough Environmental Consulting Inc. (GEC) staff are fully qualified to conduct mould and bacteria assessments in your home or office, using the latest equipment and sampling techniques.
