Underground Storage Tank Removal
An underground storage tank (UST) is a tank and any piping connected to it that is all or partly underground. USTs are most commonly found where gasoline is sold to the public or on sites operated by those who use tanks for their own needs (e.g., fleet service operators and local governments).
Until the mid-1980s, most USTs were made of bare steel, which is likely to corrode over time and permit UST contents to leak into the environment. Faulty installation or inadequate operating and maintenance procedures can also cause USTs to leak.
The greatest potential hazard posed by a leaking UST is that the petroleum or other hazardous substance inside can seep into the soil and contaminate groundwater, which is the source of drinking water for almost half of Canada’s population. Petroleum can contain contaminants that can make water unsafe or unpleasant to drink. A leaking UST can also create other health and environmental risks, including the potential for fire and explosion.
Federal regulations require contaminated UST sites to be cleaned up in order to restore and protect groundwater resources and create a safe environment for those who live or work near these sites.
